Matthias Barth creates imagery of epic proportions that invites new contemplations on nature, humanity, and ourselves. A self-taught photographic artist, today he has established Munich as his home base when not traversing the world on his adventures. His unique perspective and adventurous spirit have garnered him a dedicated global following. Spanning diverse landscapes and cultures, captured through both traditional and modern photographic techniques, we follow him on journeys that leave us awe-inspired and questioning what other beauty is hidden among us.
Barth's journey into the world of photography began in 1992, when he first picked up an analog camera. What began with simple black-and-white images ignited a lifelong passion. His early years in the Black Forest of Germany laid the foundation for his love of nature and exploration. Graduating from a Munich film school in 1995, he honed his skills as a lighting technician and assisted some of Germany's best photographers. His professional work as a freelance cameraman in advertising, documentaries, and television further refined his eye for detail, composition, and understanding of how to produce imagery that resonates with audiences. Today, having completed two trips around the world, including an extensive journey through South America, he solidified his dedication to photographic art and deepened his conceptual framework surrounding the dichotomy of wonder and isolation when on the road.
Barth's artistic practice is characterized by a quest to rediscover the world through various lenses—whether a film camera, an analog device, or a drone. His work transcends a single style, embracing a range of techniques to capture surreal, poignant images. His projects are diverse, covering urban environments like Dubai and Shanghai, the iconic Panamericana Road, and his esteemed series detailing the intricate art of Pakistani truck painters. His practice, bordering between the naturalistic and the surreal, is an innovative display of diverse perspectives and compelling compositions that leave viewers enthralled.
The esteem for Matthias Barth's work only continues to grow with international collaborations and exhibitions. Following the incredible reception, visitation, and praise of his solo exhibition “Shanghai.05” in Munich, Barth's works have been featured with institutions such as the prestigious French label YellowKorner, Artfully Walls, and Galerie Tones Gallery in the Netherlands. He is actively participating in international competitions and online galleries that enthusiastically promote his art. ARTIST STATEMENT
Matthias Barth is a self-taught photographer, translating his distinct visions of the world into imagery of epic proportions. While today he is primarily based in Munich, his journey through his viewfinder has expanded and evolved into one of international exploration. Renowned for his eclectic portfolio, Barth captures the essence of both natural landscapes and urban jungles, drawing inspiration from his extensive travels and transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary visual narratives.
Rediscovering the world through his cameras, Barth employs a unique amalgamation of analog and digital techniques - from traditional film techniques alongside a mastery of drone photography and post-production skills. Barth's style has and continues to evolve dramatically. His style is not singular but experimental, perpetually changing to match the energy and evocations of his subjects. Barth's approach often results in photographs that border on the surreal. Coupled with his acute awareness of light, he manipulates his photographs to capture the world from diverse perspectives. His work thrives on his embracing of a variety of means, methods, and motifs to permeate his practice.
From highways extending into nothingness to lone palm trees among the desert, the act of traveling and collecting these unique vantages of our world proves to be a lonely one. His work exposes the duality of adventure: one side showcasing awe-inspiring majesty and inquisitiveness, while the other is of profound isolation and solitude. Inhabiting this liminality, he immerses himself in the places, the cultures, and the experiences that seem foreign to our own. He is finding majesty in the everyday. Barth's keen eye unveils the unique visual language of a space, whether nestled in nature or the bustling metropolis, revealing the bizarre and surreal elements that exist among us.
Epitomized by his “Trucks.13” series, these Pakistani vehicles are elevated from mere means of transportation to objects of sculpture, architectural, and aesthetic wonder. Selected in the moment on location, Barth scans their forms with a special panorama head and digitally removes all backgrounds so the stunning, colorful, and outlandish nature of each truck is removed from the banality of everyday life and is brought into focus. As our guide, Barth invites us into overlooked and hidden corners of cities, captures humanly impossible views of the natural world, shares nuanced facets of different cultures, and highlights the beauty and strangeness of what can mistakenly be labeled as mundane.
Barth’s creative philosophy is based on the universality of photography to transcend barriers of language, culture, and social constructs. As an adventurer, he is creating a community to share his experiences with fellow travelers and art enthusiasts. He finds beauty in the challenge of his voyages, sharing the thrill of the journey and the inherent loneliness it can evoke. Through his art, Matthias Barth constructs an unconventional set of postcards that ask his viewers to rethink how they see and experience the world around them, inviting them to question their relationship to reality and appreciate the surreal beauty that lies beneath the surface.
